Bedbugs: A plague on the rise

Bed bugs are small, parasitic insects that feed on the blood of humans and animals while they sleep. Measuring 5 to 7 mm, they are brown or reddish and difficult to detect. Their ability to hide in the smallest nooks and crannies of the home and survive in diapause for 6 to 12 months without feeding makes them particularly hardy. Females can lay between 5 and 15 eggs a day, rapidly leading to serious infestations.

In Switzerland, bedbug infestations have risen sharply, particularly in cities such as Zurich and Geneva, due to the increase in international travel and trade in second-hand goods. Since 2020, the number of reported cases has doubled, posing a growing public health problem. These insects cause health problems such as allergic reactions, skin infections, sleep disturbances, and significant psychological and economic impacts, requiring rapid intervention for their eradication.

BED BUGS: A SCOURGE NOT TO BE UNDERESTIMATED

What are bed bugs?

The bed bugs are small, parasitic insects that feed on the blood of humans and animals while they sleep. Measuring around 5 to 7 mm in length, they are the color of an apple seed (reddish-brown) and are extremely difficult to detect due to their small size and ability to hide in small cracks and nooks, particularly in mattresses, box springs and furniture. With their oval, flattened shapes, bed bugs can get into the smallest nooks and crannies of your apartment or house.

Bed bugs can survive without feeding by entering a dormant state called diapause, where their metabolism slows considerably. Under optimal temperature conditions, these tiny insects can live up to 6 to 12 months without feeding. This ability enables them to survive for long periods, even when human food sources are unavailable. What's more, female bedbugs can lay between 5 and 15 eggs a day, which can cause serious discomfort very quickly (Source: rts.ch).

In Switzerland, bedbugs have been on the rise significantly in recent years. Reports of infestations have risen sharply, particularly in large cities like Zurich and Geneva. Experts attribute this rise to several factors: the increase in international travel and the trade in second-hand goods (Sources : rts.ch, ASLOCA).

Indeed, since 2020, some studies and reports indicate a two-fold increase in reported cases of bedbugs. This situation can be explained by the increased mobility of populations and the lack of vigilance regarding items brought back from travel or bought second-hand, which can be infested without this being immediately apparent (Source: ASLOCA). Bed bugs are thus a growing public health problem.

What are the consequences of a bedbug infestation?

These insects travel through our luggage when we return from vacation, and can then settle into our homes, multiplying very rapidly and biting us while we sleep, causing considerable inconvenience to our health, well-being, quality of life and social life. Bedbugs are a problem that can also be very costly (Source: À bon entendeur).

Here's an overview of the most notable consequences:

1. Health problems

Like Allergic Reactions:

Bedbug bites can cause allergic reactions in some people, ranging from simple itching to more severe reactions with extensive skin rashes.

Or Infections:

They can also cause infections: scratching bites can lead to secondary skin infections if open wounds are exposed to bacteria.

But also Sleep disturbances:

Bed bugs especially disrupt sleep: The itching andanxiety caused by bed bugs can seriously disrupt sleep, leading to fatigue and a general decline in health.

2. Psychological and emotional impacts

Like Stress and Anxiety:

Living with a bedbug infestation can lead to constant stress and heightened anxiety, not least because of the difficulty of eradicating these pests and the fear of further bites.

And Social Shame:

We must also consider the social shame that bed bugs generate: Affected individuals may feel shame andembarrassment, often avoiding talking about it or seeking help, which can exacerbate the problem.

3. Economic consequences

Due to Treatment Costs:

Professional treatments to eradicate bed bugs can be very expensive and often require several interventions to be completely effective. Whether byheat treatment, fumigation, cryonics or chemical treatment, bedbug eradication with these methods is time-consuming and over-investing, with very high costs that can run into several thousand francs. What's more, complete eradication may require combined treatments, making the interventions extremely expensive.

But also because of Asset Replacement:

In some cases, it may be necessary to replace infested mattresses, furniture and other objects, incurring significant additional costs.

In other words, bed bugs represent a serious problem with multiple repercussions on health, psychological well-being and finances. It's crucial to take immediate action to treat infestations in order to minimize impacts by eliminating these tenacious pests.

SuperCobra bedbug percussion spray is an effective method of combating infestations, thanks to its high-pressure spray mechanism and powerful insecticides. However, correct use is crucial for safe and effective bedbug treatment.
