Main causes of snoring and sleep apnea

Generally speaking, during sleep, the weakening of throat muscle tone and the receding of the back of the tonguereduce the opening for air to pass through. This causes turbulence, leading to vibration of the soft palate and pharynx, the source of snoring. In addition to annoying others, snoring can progress to more severe airflow obstruction, characterized by breathing pauses of varying intensity. This more serious pathology, known as sleep apnea, warrants medical consultation.

Main factors aggravating snoring

- Being overweight
- Drinkingalcohol in the evening
- Smoking, sleeping pills and tranquilizers
- Sleeping on your back
- Severe fatigue
- Dry nasal mucosa, deviated nasal septum


Health effects of snoring and apnea

- Micro-arousals disrupt the deep sleep phase (particularly in the case of apnea)
- Detrimental changes to recovery phases
- Daytime fatigue, drowsiness, inattentiveness at the wheel, bad mood
- Headaches, heaviness and night sweats.
