Why measure your oxygen saturation?

Oxygen saturation, among other things , provides information on the efficiency of oxygen transport — in other words , primarily on respiration. It is an important parameter for assessing respiratory function. In many cases, it helps characterize lung function and activity. Disorders in the body’s oxygen supply (lack of O2) can cause the following symptoms:

General: Dyspnea, decreased performance, dizziness, anxiety, weight loss, clubbing of the fingers, cyanosis, hyperventilation

Cardiac: Angina pectoris, tachycardia, arrhythmias

CNS: Fatigue, confusion, impaired cognitive function, loss of consciousness, coma

Monitoring oxygen saturation is essential in medical practice, as this value provides physicians with critical information needed to decide on appropriate therapeutic measures in a timely manner.

How does measuring blood oxygen levels work?

Oxygen concentration is measured using the photometric method employed by the AEROcheck® Finger Pulse Oximeter and Beer-Lambert’s law ( the foundation of modern photometry). Using the photometric measurement method employed by the device, light emitted by a sensor passes through the pulsating blood flow in the finger.

On one side of the finger clip, the sensor consists of two light sources illuminating a predefined area (wavelengths of 660 nm for red light and 940 nm for infrared light). Depending on the different coloration of oxygen-saturated hemoglobin, the resulting absorption varies and is measured by a photosensitive sensor on the other side of the finger cuff. The measured signal is processed by a microprocessor before being displayed on the screen.

This pulse oximeterfeatures a high-quality display. In addition, the information is displayed in color, which greatly improves the screen’s readability. For greater reading comfort, the orientation of the data can also be adjusted, allowing you to switch between normal mode (horizontal display) and vertical mode.
